University of Akron South Residence Hall

UNIVERSITY OF AKRON | AKRON, OH

During a period of significant growth, the University of Akron embarked on a planned residential life initiative to enhance the student experience and strengthen campus life. Developed as the first phase of that initiative, South Residence Hall provides 531 beds in a variety of living options and shared amenities that foster community, encourage student engagement and support academic success.

A mix of suite-style and shared living arrangements balances privacy with opportunities for interaction, while study lounges, social spaces, multimedia rooms and student services create an environment where students can live, learn and connect. Thoughtfully integrated amenities, including fitness opportunities, collaborative workspaces and technology throughout the building, support the evolving needs of campus life and contribute to a vibrant residential community.

South Residence Hall was funded through a public-private partnership (P3) and delivered using a developer-led design-build approach. Working closely with the University, developer and construction team, JCJ helped deliver a project that transferred delivery risk while allowing the University to maintain control of design, day-to-day management and long-term ownership. The project demonstrates JCJ’s ability to collaborate successfully within alternative project delivery models while helping clients realize complex higher education projects.

Situated on a gently sloping site adjacent to the University’s Exchange Street Apartments, the residence hall uses a compact footprint and carefully terraced design to respond to challenging site conditions while reinforcing the evolving character of the southern campus.
