UMASS Lowell Rowdy’s eSports

THE UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS LOWELL | LOWELL, MA

As colleges and universities continue to invest in esports programs, the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML) recognized an opportunity to establish its own esports program with a dedicated home in University Crossing, the University’s student center. Rather than pursue new construction, the University identified an underutilized storage area on the lower level of the bookstore. Through the University’s House Doctor program, JCJ conducted a feasibility study that confirmed the space could successfully support the University’s goals for a dedicated esports facility.

JCJ worked closely with University stakeholders and student users to understand the operational, technical and experiential needs of UML’s esports program and how those needs could be successfully integrated into the identified space. Working collaboratively with University leaders, JCJ translated the University’s vision into a design that transformed an underutilized campus asset into a dynamic destination for competition, community and student engagement. As the project advanced, the design was strategically refined to align with budget priorities while preserving UML’s vision for the student experience. Central to that vision was creating a flexible environment that supports competitive play, recreation, broadcasting, content creation and future program growth.

The completed arena provides dedicated space for varsity competition, casual gaming, tournaments and campus events, anchored by 52 mobile gaming stations, spectator seating, a broadcast room and flexible team spaces. Dynamic lighting, integrated technology and University branding create an immersive environment that celebrates school spirit and welcomes students of all experience levels.
