UMass Amherst John Francis Kennedy Champions Center

THE UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST | AMHERST, MA

Home to UMass Amherst’s NCAA Division I men’s and women’s basketball programs, the John Francis Kennedy Champions Center was developed to create a comprehensive environment for student-athlete development. Recognizing the need for modern facilities that support men’s and women’s basketball programs equally and meet Title IX requirements, UMass Amherst selected JCJ to create a state-of-the-art center that brings together practice, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, nutrition, coaching and academic support in a single integrated facility. Designed to foster athletic performance, student development and competitive excellence, the Champions Center has become a cornerstone of the University’s basketball program and an important asset in the recruitment and retention of student-athletes.

Located adjacent to the Mullins Center at the southern gateway to campus, the Champions Center anchors UMass Amherst’s athletics and recreation district. The 56,500-square-foot facility includes identical practice courts, team rooms and administrative suites for both the men’s and women’s basketball programs, and provides a direct connection to the arena floor for game-day events. Core amenities include a strength and conditioning center, nutrition center, sports medicine suite with hydrotherapy, film room and collaborative support spaces. All areas were carefully organized to streamline daily routines and maximize opportunities for training, recovery and team cohesion.

Set into the site’s natural grade, the building provides entrances at both the upper and lower campus levels. Drawing inspiration from the surrounding campus architecture, the exterior combines Portuguese limestone, brick and curtain wall glazing to create a contemporary yet contextually responsive design. The project achieved LEED Gold certification through a variety of sustainable design strategies.

The Champions Center reflects UMass Amherst’s long-term investment in the success of its student-athletes and the continued growth of its Division I basketball programs. By creating an environment where practice, training, wellness and academic support are seamlessly integrated, the facility strengthens the daily experience of student-athletes while enhancing the University’s ability to recruit, develop and support future generations of student-athletes.
