UMass Amherst Hampden Student Commons Study

THE UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST | AMHERST, MA

Recognizing the need for a central gathering place within its Southwest Residential Area, the University of Massachusetts Amherst engaged JCJ to evaluate the potential for transforming the Hampden Dining Commons into a vibrant student commons. Building on previous campus studies, the team completed a planning and concept design study that explored how the existing facility could better support student life through flexible spaces for gathering, meetings, package pickup and casual dining.

JCJ conducted a comprehensive assessment of the building’s existing conditions to identify the opportunities and challenges associated with a future renovation. The study evaluated code requirements, fire protection, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, the building’s capacity to accommodate new uses, and the improvements required to meet current energy and accessibility standards.

The study provided the University with a clear understanding of the improvements required to successfully reposition the facility as a modern student commons. By combining facility assessment with conceptual planning, JCJ helped the University establish a strategic foundation for future decision-making and long-term investment within one of the campus’s key residential neighborhoods.
