SUNY Fredonia Technology Incubator
STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK AT FREDONIA | DUNKIRK, NY
Fredonia Technology Incubator was conceived by a consortium including the City of Fredonia, the Dunkirk-Sheridan Empire Zone and the Dunkirk Local Development Corporation, and SUNY Fredonia with the goal of promoting economic growth in the Western Southern Tier of New York. To attract entrepreneurial faculty and students who would benefit and learn from small technology-oriented businesses, the group commissioned JCJ to program and design a new facility that would accommodate a growing number of young, innovative, technology-based startup operations.
Strategically located on Central Avenue in Dunkirk, the multi-story facility serves as a bridge between downtown and the commercial area while re-establishing a link to the waterfront. After extensive research and collaborative dialogues with Fredonia stakeholders such as the president, administrators, faculty, and program directors, the facility includes common areas, collaborative space, and administrative assistance areas and tenant spaces that vary in size to accommodate a range of business types. Other services included a Phase 1 Environmental Assessment, evaluation of code requirements and accessibility issues, and legislative regulations.
It incorporates numerous sustainable design elements, including a white roof and energy management system. Its mechanical systems were fully commissioned (tested and proven for efficiency) prior to opening, and the construction materials were recycled.
Its laboratories are “dry labs,” with no harsh chemicals or heavy machinery involved. It was also erected in a dense developmental area and is well-integrated with existing downtown infrastructure, ensuring a social symbiosis with the community that makes it more environmentally friendly.
