Pechanga Cultural Repository

The Pechanga Band of Indians established the Pechanga Cultural Repository to safeguard, honor and preserve the cultural heritage of the Payómkawichum (Luiseño) people. Operated by the Pechanga Cultural Resources Department, the facility provides a permanent home for tribal artifacts, historical documents, photographs and audiovisual materials, supporting their long-term stewardship, care and research.

JCJ partnered with the Pechanga Band of Indians to design a repository and cultural campus that balances specialized archival requirements with spaces that support education, cultural programming and community gathering. Organized to serve the distinct needs of collections management, staff and visitors, the repository brings together secure archival storage, research and preparation spaces, administrative offices and a multi-purpose area within a cohesive environment that was designed for the preservation and responsible stewardship of the Nation’s cultural resources.

The architectural expression draws upon concepts identified by the Nation as central to the project: stone and storage. Stone reflects one of the earliest materials used for both practical tools and ceremonial objects, while storage acknowledges a longstanding tradition of protecting and preserving important resources. Together, these ideas informed a facility that honors the Nation’s cultural traditions while supporting the long-term care of its collections for future generations.
