Pechanga Chámmakilawish Tribal School

Designed for the Pechanga Band of Indians, the Chámmakilawish Tribal School is the result of a collaborative planning process that brought together Tribal Council, Tribal members, the Cultural Committee and school representatives to establish a shared vision for a learning environment that reflects the Community’s values, traditions and aspirations for future generations.

The planning process defined guiding principles that informed every aspect of the project, creating a school that is inspiring, flexible, collaborative and responsive to the evolving needs of students. The resulting 39,000-square-foot campus includes classrooms, specialized learning spaces, administrative offices, a library and a multi-purpose cafeteria and gymnasium designed to support a broad range of educational and community activities.

The architecture draws inspiration from the surrounding landscape, native wildlife, traditional arts and language. Building placement and architectural details acknowledge the significance of Pu’éska Mountain, creating opportunities for students to maintain meaningful connections to the history, culture and traditions of the Pechanga Band while learning in a contemporary educational environment.
