James T. Murphy, AIA, NCARB , LEED AP is a Principal, Senior Project Manager and Director of Risk Management at JCJ. With a professional background spanning architecture, project delivery, construction law, corporate practice and governance, Jim brings a uniquely informed perspective to supporting clients, advising project teams and guiding firm leadership.
Jim began his architectural career at JCJ, beginning as a Draftsman and progressing to a construction contract administrator on JCJ’s first hospitality project in Connecticut. After earning his law degree, Jim departed the firm to practice construction law. He returned to JCJ in 2003, bringing real-world legal experience that strengthened his understanding of contracts, documentation, project management and the broader risks associated with architectural practice.
In his role as Director of Risk Management, Jim advises the firm on contract negotiations, consultant agreements, insurance, professional liability and corporate governance. His combined experience as an architect, attorney and project leader allows him to bring a unique perspective around design decisions, contractual obligations and project outcomes. He also serves on the Executive Committee of JCJ Architecture’s Board of Directors and corporate Secretary and acts as an advisor to project teams and operational groups across the firm.
As a Senior Project Manager and Principal in Charge, Jim has guided large-scale hospitality, gaming and commercial projects from pre-design planning through documentation and construction administration. His ability to anticipate challenges, clarify responsibilities and support sound decision-making helps project teams navigate complexity. Balancing his firmwide leadership responsibilities, Jim remains actively engaged in helping clients and project teams achieve their goals while protecting design intent and supporting successful project delivery.
Jim earned Bachelor and Master of Architecture degrees from Tulane University and a Juris Doctor from Western New England University School of Law. He is a LEED Accredited Professional.
