Freedom Village Opens in Manhattan’s East Village

JCJ Architecture is proud to celebrate the completion of Freedom Village, a new 13-story affordable housing development at 270 East 2nd Street in Manhattan’s East Village, designed for Barrier Free Living.

The $54 million development provides 74 fully accessible apartments for survivors of domestic violence and older adults who have experienced homelessness. Returning to the site where Barrier Free Living was founded in 1981, Freedom Village replaces a former school building that served as transitional housing for nearly three decades.

Designed around accessibility, dignity, and community, the building provides residents with supportive services, community and program spaces, and a rooftop recreation terrace featuring a tenant-operated garden. Energy-efficient systems and Enterprise Green Communities standards further support the project’s commitment to creating a healthy, sustainable living environment.
