Middletown Police Headquarters
MIDDLETOWN, CT
Through a competitive bid process, JCJ was selected as Design Architect by the City of Middletown to build a new Police Headquarters. The team evaluated ten sites before the Building Committee selected the abandoned Sears Building on Main Street.
Preliminary design concepts identified programmatic needs for 53,000-square-feet of building area and an adjacent 183 space parking structure. We encountered many challenges, such as the lengthy site selection process, environmental issues, zoning constraints, budgetary limitations, and the need for public approval of the project.
With full collaboration of the building committee and contractor, we were successful in value engineering the project to meet budgetary constraints and saved approximately $500,000 without compromising program scope or the architectural concept. The project was approved by Bipartisan political support and residential voters and the new Police Station formed the backbone of a vigorous revitalization of the City’s downtown commercial and retail areas.
