XL Center

CAPITAL REGION DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY | HARTFORD, CT

Located in the heart of downtown Hartford, the XL Center serves as a venue for local and regional sports and entertainment events. Originally opened in 1975 as the Hartford Civic Center, the State of Connecticut set aside funding for improvements and upgrades that would extend the facility’s lifespan by 8-10 years. The Capital Region Development Authority, acting as the owner, sought to create a more contemporary, visitor-friendly experience by creating transparency and connection to the exterior and between spaces, better wayfinding, upgraded seating options and a concourse that felt warm and inviting. The work would create a more fan and visitor-friendly experience, address accessibility in public areas, improve operational efficiency and access, address building envelope and system issues and upgrade team and entertainment related spaces.

Given the age of the XL Center, it was understood at the outset that the design, documentation and construction process would be a complex undertaking. JCJ was selected for the project because of our strong approach to project management and documentation as well as our experience in delivery projects on accelerated schedules.

The project provided comprehensive renovations that refreshed the look and feel for visitors to the XL Center and improved the experience for groups who occupy the facility on a day-to-day basis.
