Casa Blanca Community School

THE GILA RIVER INDIAN COMMUNITY | BAPCHULE, AZ

Designed for the Gila River Indian Community, Casa Blanca Community School serves students and families from Districts 3, 4 and 5 in a learning environment that supports academic achievement while celebrating the language, culture and traditions of the Akimel O’otham and Pee Posh peoples. Located within an area historically used for agriculture, the campus reflects the enduring relationship between education, culture and the land.

The campus plan draws inspiration from the agricultural fields and canal systems that have sustained the Community for generations. Classroom clusters and shared learning spaces are organized along a central ribbon of green space, creating a sequence of indoor and outdoor commons that encourage collaboration, flexible instruction and connections between grade levels.

A signature feature of the campus is the Agriculture–Cultural Arts–Language–Applied Arts building, which supports an immersive curriculum connecting the practical, scientific, historical and cultural dimensions of agriculture. Raised planting beds, traditional waffle gardens and water features throughout the campus reinforce lessons about stewardship, sustainability and the life-giving role of water in the desert landscape.

Developed in collaboration with Community members, parents and elders, the campus incorporates a robust public art program celebrating the creativity, ingenuity and traditions of the Gila River Indian Community. Designed in accordance with Universal Design for Learning principles, the school also includes dedicated sensory spaces and inclusive learning environments that support students of all abilities.

Completed in 2021, Casa Blanca Community School provides a vibrant educational environment where culture, community and learning come together to support future generations.
