This new facility was designed to serve members of the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians and to become the functional and symbolic center for their community. The state-of-the-art multipurpose facility provides the Tribe with a central meeting place and an arts and athletic center. It includes studio spaces, dance and aerobics facilities, and cardiovascular and strength areas. The center is surrounded by basketball courts, baseball fields, tennis courts, tots and a passive picnic area. The region is prone to devastating fires and other disasters so the complex has also been designed to serve as a central command center; constructed of fire resistant materials and reinforced to withstand other natural occurrences; the center provides a refuge and emergency shelter for the entire community.
