Set in the Quinnipiac Meadows neighborhood of New Haven, the new Bishop Woods school is a K-8 facility that sits on the site of the former Bishop Woods K-4 facility. The property is adjacent to a bird sanctuary, a 20-acre nature preserve that backs up to the site. The building, set into the steep hill that forms the edge of the preserve, is three levels on the street level with an exit to grade on the second level bus drop that runs around the rear of the building.

Designed to bring daylight into all teaching and corridor spaces, the building meets all high performance standards as required by the City of New Haven and received the United States Environmental Protection Agency “Energy Star” award. The team worked closely with the School-Based Building Advisory Committee--made up of teachers, administrators, parents, neighbors and various community members-- in the development of the program and design.
